KENYANS IN MALAYSIA -1ST INTER UNIVERSITY GAMES IN MALAYSIA – MASHUJAA DAY

The Kenya High commission in Malaysia spear headed a successful inter university games which was held at the Panasonic sports Complex Shah Alam, Malaysia on 29th October 2011. The Sports event was in conjunction with the Mashujaa Day Celebration which was actually on the 20th of October celebrated in Kenya to honor the country’s heroes. The event attracted students from more than 9 universities and colleges, showed great participation in athletics, rugby, Football and Netball. The turnout was estimated to about 400 students.

The organizing committee that also ran the program on that day was composed of Kenyan student representatives from all colleges. High level dignitaries that attended the event were Ambassadors and High Commissioners from Senegal, Namibia, Zambia, New Libya, Sudan and Swaziland, as well as CEO’s and corporate representation from UCTI, Dunham-Bush, On-Call Travel Agency etc gracing the occasion.
Both the Students and guests enjoyed the unity seen among the Kenyans that was demonstrated during the entire period of sports day. Sponsors made the day even more successful by making available enough bottled and cup water supply, goody bags and food.
Kenyan students from, Nottingham University won the Rugby trophy, while the Kenyan Students from the Islamic International University took the football trophy,

the Kenyan students from UCTI took home the Netball trophy. Limkokwing University won most of the athletics track events, and David Kamau Kimani was awarded “The High Commissioner’s Trophy Award” having displayed exceptional and brilliant performance in Athletics, Rugby and Soccer. Trophies and medals were also awarded to winning teams as well as Most Valuable Players in each of the sporting activity as sign of motivation.
The Kenya High Commissioner in Malaysia, H.E. Amb. Samori Okwiya, declared that the event will be annual, he acknowledged the unity and patriotism of the Kenyan students in Malaysia and one that was displayed on that day. The main event sponsors which included Limkokwing University, UCTI University, Dunham-Bush, On-Call Travel and CARLSBERG among other also received acknowledgement for support of the event. All in all it was successful event and starting point in bringing Kenyans together as one people away from home.
Institutions that participated include:
- Islamic International University,– Legenda/Linton University,–Limkokwing University,– Nottingham University,– Sunway University,– SEGi University,Taylors University and University College of Technology & Innovation (UCTI/APIIT).
