One of the core functions of the Mission is to facilitate the issuance of travel documents to Kenyan Citizen. The travel documents include:
- Kenyan passports and Emergency Certificate
- Certificate of identity & Nationality
N.B. From the 1st of January 2007 the normal life of an ordinary Kenyan passport will be 10 years, and a fresh passport is issued thereafter
Kenya Passport Renewal
Kenyan citizens wishing to apply for a new or renew their passports, travel documents or Emergency Certificates can do so at their nearest Kenya Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.
Passports Requirements
- All applicants must fill the application forms.
- Persons over 16 years of age Form PP1
- Children under 16 years of age Form PP2
- Documentary evidence of Kenya Citizenship i.e. Naturalization, Registration, and Birth Certificates & ID/Card original and copies.
- Photographs Guidelines
- Photographs of the applicant taken full face, without head-scuff or wigs. The photographs must have been taken within the last six months of the date of passport application.
- Photographs may be black and white or coloured and must not be mounted. The size of the photographs must 2 by 1½inches, machine photos are not acceptable.
- In case of married woman-documentary evidence of marriage e.g. Sworn Affidavit, marriage certificate.
- In case of children /people under the age of 21 years of age, written Consent from Father or legal guardian unless one is a member of the Armed forces.
- The Application must be recommended in section '6' by a citizen of Kenya such as Minister of religion, a Minister or Legal Practitioner, an established Civil Servant or Bank Official personally acquainted with the applicant, but not by immediate relatives.
- Applicant must be Bona Fide Kenya citizen.
- For all employees, an introductory letter from employer confirming employment and purpose for visit.
- For religious officials, ordination certificate (original and photocopy).
- For persons traveling for religious purposes a letter from the local registered religious organization confirming membership and purpose of the visit. Certificate of registration of the religious organization may be required.
- For businesspersons certificate of registration original and a photocopy.
- A letter from the business associate to be visited may be required.
For students the following additional documents are required: -
- Letter of admission to school or college (original and copy)
- Form 1-20 (for USA college)
- Letter of clearance from the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education.
- Parents/guardians affidavit in support of the passport application Travel.
Kenya citizenship-registration certificate for those registered citizens (original and photocopy) and a renunciation certificate and if the applicant is born in Kenya after independence (1963) etc and one of the parents is Kenyan.
Notes For New Passport
- How to complete form: Sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of this form must be completed by all applicants for new passports.
- Sections 7 and 8 must be completed if the applicant's wife and children under 16 are to be included in the passport. A joint passport for husband and wife cannot be issued if the wife is not a citizen of Kenya. The marriage certificate must be produced.
NB: A joint passport cannot be used by the wife or children if they are not traveling with the holder of the passport. A new passport is required by a woman on marriage. Children over 16 years of age (14 years if proceeding to the USA) may not be included in an adult's passport.
- Recommendation of Application: The application must be recommended in Section 6 by a citizen of Kenya, such as a Minister of Religion, a Medical or Legal Practitioner, an established Civil Servant or Bank Official personally acquainted with the applicant, but not by immediate relatives.
- Photographs: Two copies of a recent photograph of the applicant (and also his wife where a joint passport is applied for) must be included with the application. These photographs must be taken full face without hat, and the photographs must not be mounted.
The size of the photograph must not be more than 2.5 inches by 2 inches or less than 2 inches by 1.5 inches. The photographs must be printed on normal thin photographic paper and must not be glazed on the reverse side.
The recommender is also required to endorse the reverse side of one copy of the photograph with the words: "I certify that this is a true likeness of the applicant Mr. (Mrs. or Miss) .........................." and add his signature. Where a joint passport is applied for one copy of the wife's photograph should be similarly certified.
- Children under the age of 21 years of age may not be granted passport facilities without the written consent of the legal guardian, i.e. the father, or if the father is dead, the mother, except where the applicant is married or a member of the armed forces.
- Documentary evidence must be produced to support claims to citizenship status.
- All applications must be supported by a previous passport or a birth certificate.

Section 90 of the Constitution of Kenya states that:-
A Person born outside Kenya after 11th December, 1963 shall become a citizen of Kenya at the date of his/her birth if at that date his/her father was a citizen of Kenya.

If at the time of my birth one of my parents was not a Kenya Citizen and I was born in Kenya, is it possible that I have dual citizenship? If the answer is yes up to which age? |

Kenya Constitution Section 97 (1) (6) (a) states that:
Any person who, upon the attainment of the age of twenty-one years, is a citizen of Kenya and also a citizen of another country other than Kenya shall cease to be a citizen of Kenya upon the specified date (6)(a) that is: twenty-three (23) years.

If a child is born in Kenya of parents who are not Kenya Citizens, does he/she qualify to be a citizen of Kenya? |

If I am a single mother holding a Kenya passport, and have a child born outside Kenya, does the child become a Kenya Citizen if the father is unknown? |

No. But when the mother is ready to travel to Kenya with the child she is advised to apply for one way travel document for the child.
While in Kenya she should apply for a dependants' pass for the child (in order to regularize the child's immigration status). The mother should then get the child registered as a Kenya Citizen after which she can apply for the child's passport.

Such a child is not a Kenya citizen and cannot be issued with a Kenya passport.

If such a person wishes to retain Kenya citizenship, he/she is advised to renounce other nationality before the age of 23 years. Failure to renounce results in automatic loss of Kenya citizenship after age 23.
